Al Jolson Home Page|His Works|Radio|02 Apr 45 Lux Swanee River

Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio programs, in Real Audio format, for your enjoyment.

Swanee River
The Lux Radio Theatre enjoyed a reputation of translating popular motion pictures into radio programs. From April 2, 1945, here is the radio version of Al Jolson's performance in the motion picture biopic of the life of Stephen Foster, Swanee River.

Jolson reprised his role of minstrel star E.P.Christy from the film. Taking the place of Don Ameche, playing Stephen Foster, was Dennis Morgan. Frances Gifford played wife Jane McDowell, and the program was hosted by Walter Huston.

The one hour program is complete here, except for the station breaks and commercials. It closely follows the movie story line, with Jolson acting as both star and narrator of the story. A cautionary note must be given for some of the language used in the play, which may not be consistent with today's standards. One needs to listen to the program given the context and time in which it was performed.

Rather than try to summarize the plot, just sit back and enjoy the program. Through its course, you will enjoy the following songs:

"Oh, Susanna" and "Camptown Races," sung by Al Jolson. "My Old Kentucky Home," sung by Al Jolson and Dennis Morgan. "Ring, Ring the Banjo," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," and "Old Black Joe," sung by Dennis Morgan. "Old Folks at Home," sung by Al Jolson.

What would a Jolson show be without a Jolson song, so listen to Jolie's encore number, "April Showers."

This program is about as fine an example of radio drama as I've ever heard. The story, scenes, and characters mirror the film, and you can almost picture the action as it is described. I know you will enjoy this program.
