Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio programs, in Real Audio format, for your enjoyment.

The Lux Radio Theatre was famous for presenting one hour radio adaptations of popular movies. In 1947, riding the crest of the Jolson comeback, a movie from 1938 was used as the basis for this broadcast.

With Tyrone Power from the original cast, Dick Haymes, Margaret Whiting, and Dinah Shore joined forces to present the Irving Berlin musical Alexander's Ragtime Band. Only this time the play was rewritten to include Al Jolson as both name attraction and narrator.

The story line is the classic boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again, but it is surrounded by great performances and wonderful Berlin songs.

Jolson is written into the story as the narrator, advancing the plot to accomplish the radio adaptation. Along the way he gives stellar performances of "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Lazy," and "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody." And at the end, a little "April Showers," even!

That this program was recorded during a busy time in Jolson's career may be an understatement. On Monday, March 31, he rehearsed a Philco program with Bing Crosby. He did a broadcast with Crosby on Wednesday, April 2. This program followed on Monday, April 7; and April 8 saw him on the Bob Hope show. Jolie was on a roll!

Sit back and enjoy this great hour of radio entertainment. If only Jolson had been in the movie!
