Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio programs, in Real Audio format, for your enjoyment.

This appearance, on the Bob Hope Pepsodent Program, capped a string of radio guest shots that saw Al Jolson on all the top radio shows within a several week period.

Bob Hope's opening featured the string of rapid fire jokes that he made famous, with all kinds of topical references. There must have been a telephone stike, made reference to in regard to a giveaway contest on the show. So who thinks that winning prizes on the air is a new thing?

After the opener, the contest, tied to the release of Bob Hope's new movie, was plugged. Four Chevrolets, four refrigerators, and four hundred dollar bills could be yours for a jingle.

Comedian Jerry Colonna was up next, with a routine again tied to the movie, beautiful brunettes, and Jerry's famous mustache.

Bubblehead character Vera Vague, who guested on a later Kraft Music Hall with Jolie, made an appearance. Her variety of humor is also still seen on television today.

Introduced as "one of the all time great names in show business," Al Jolson came on singing "California, Here I Come." Bandleader Desi Arnaz refused to start playing until the audience stopped applauding Jolie, despite Hope's directive to begin! The ovation at the end took Hope stepping on it a few times to put it down.

Jolie took a moment to plug the movie Alexander's Ragtime Band, which he had just done on the Lux Radio Theatre the previous night. Enjoy Hope's comment about Frank Sinatra, and then more news of the Chevrolet contest. Listen closely behind Wendell Niles for the comments. Then again, by the audience reactions, one can only guess what Bob and Al were doing!

Don't get too excited to hear "Alexander's Ragtime Band," it's just a tease. But there was a real tease about Jolie on the radio, which took three takes to get out. Following this, a bunch of jokes about movies, comebacks, and money. Even another poke at Frankie!

After all the clowning, and good natured ribbing about Jolie's life and style, he concluded the segment with Irving Berlin's great song, "Always." Hope closed the show, with another nice word or two about Jolson, and a plug for his picture.
