Living Era CD AJA 5596 This interesting British issue from the company that has brought us two other good Jolson CDs includes seven tracks from Jolson radio performances. From the 04 Jan 50 Crosby show, songs are "Is Is True What They Say About Dixie?" and "Carolina In The Morning;" from the 06 Mar 47 Eddie Cantor Show, short versions of "Swanee," "Anniversary Song," "California, Here I Come," "If You Knew Susie," "Ida, Sweet As Apple Cider," and "Toot, Toot Tootsie;" from the Kraft Music Hall of 7 Oct 48, a bit with Edward G. Robinson; from the Eddie Cantor Show 8 Jan 48, "California, Here I Come," "Is It True What They Say About Dixie?" "April Showers," "Now's The Time To Fall In Love," and "Near You;" from the Crosby show of 28 Dec 49, "Swanee," "Red, Red Robin," and "I Only Have Eyes For You;" from the Kraft show of 4 Nov 48, "Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet;" and from the Crosby show of 15 Feb 50, "Bye-Bye Baby." Some of these songs are just a few bars, some are longer, some in duet and some solo. The audio quality varies, with some a bit over processed. Still, this is an enjoyable recording which fans and not-yet fans will certainly enjoy. |
![]() | Hallmark 308492 Another British CD that has found its way to Internet auctions, here are 20 cuts mostly from the Brunswick era. Note that all the recordings are Brunswicks except "I'm Sitting On Top Of The World," which is from the sound track of The Singing Fool, and "You Made Me Love You," which is a Columbia. This is not a bad CD, and the quality is fairly good throughout. |

This is a fairly clean disc with some good recordings. |
![]() | Nimbus NI-2009 Robert Parker has made a career of restoring 78 rpm recordings to modern standards, and this CD is a fine example of his craft. Featuring 28 Decca tracks, they are cleaned up and augmented with a tad of reverberation; not enough to detract as the simulated stereo of the 1960s did, but enough to flesh out the sound. Tracks include: When The Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along; I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover/Baby Face; Pretty Baby; The Spaniard That Blighted My Life (w/Crosby); There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder; About A Quarter To Nine; I'm Sitting On Top Of The World; My Mammy; April Showers; Ma Blushin' Rosie; Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody; You Made Me Love You; California, Here I Come; Sonny Boy; Avalon; Swanee; Carolina In The Morning; Toot, Toot, Tootsie; Liza; For Me And My Gal; Anniversary Song; When You Were Sweet Sixteen; If I Only Had A Match; Is It True What They Say About Dixie (w/Mills Bros); Waiting For The Robert E. LaserLight 12 585 This album is a subset of Larry Kiner's orginal Peaceful Productions ALK album, with half of the cuts strung together without breaks. Still, it's a nice selection of songs from the Kraft Music Hall. Includes: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes; Say It Isn't So; Without A Song; How Deep Is The Ocean; Ol' Man River; Look For The Silver Lining; Roses Of Picardy; Ma Blushin' Rosie; They Didn't Believe Me; You Made Me Love You; My Wild Irish Rose; and Avalon. |

The Very Best Of Al Jolson - Prism PLATCD 130 On the surface, this collection of 20 repressed Decca and Kraft cuts looks very nice. It includes: Swanee; Toot, Toot, Tootsie; My Mammy; For Me And My Gal; Alexander's Ragtime Band; Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody; California, Here I Come; Sweet Sixteen; Avalon; Carolina In The Morning; Sonny Boy; Is It True What They Say About Dixie? Alabamy Bound; You Made me Love You; Give My Regards To Broadway; I Only Have Eyes For You; I'm Sitting On Top Of The World; April Showers; There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder; Let Me Sing And I'm Happy. Available from several sources, including frequently on Internet auctions, it should be avoided. Many of the tracks have false starts and cuts, and several, including "Swanee," have choruses duplicated to make the track run longer. There are better Jolson albums than this one; I don't recommend this CD. |

The Sound Track Factory SFCD33533 With cuts from more than just The Jazz Singer, this CD is a nice collection of movie tracks from Jolson's earlier films. Selections include: [The Jazz Singer] Dirty Hands! Dirty Face!; Toot, Toot, Tootsie!; Blue Skies; Mother Of Mine, I Still Have You; My Mammy; [The Singing Fool] It All Depends On You; I'm Sitting On Top Of The World; The Spaniard That Blighted My Life; There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder; Golden Gate; Sonny Boy; [Say It With Songs] Back In Your Own Backyard; Used To You; I'm In Seventh Heaven; [Mammy] Let Me Sing And I'm Happy; (Across The Breakfast Table) Looking At You; Why Do They All Take The Night Boat To Albany? ![]() | CCM-441 Marketed by the mail order Collector's Choice Music, this CD is billed as a one night Jolson concert, but is in reality a sequence of Jolson performances from a variety of Kraft Music Hall broadcasts. As such, the audio quality varies a bit, sometimes quite a bit, between selections. Tracks include: California, Here I Come; Come To Me, Bend To Me; Waiting For The Robert E. Lee; Anniversary Song; Liza; All My Love; Toot, Toot, Tootsie Goodbye; Without A Song; Is It True What They Say About Dixie?; By The Light Of The Silv'ry Moon; Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula; When You Were Sweet Sixteen; Alabamy Bound; Memories; Just One Of Those Things; Ol' Man River; For Me And My Gal; What'll I Do?; There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder; The Best Things In Life Are Free. Better quality versions of these songs are available on the IAJS Decca CDs; this may be a nice CD to take in the car on a trip, though. |

![]() | I.M.D. Al Jolson - Great Songs IMD-4041-2 There really are ten great songs by Al Jolson on this inexpensive disc. Unfortunately, the transfers are not of the best quality, with some breaking up on sound peaks and occasional dropouts. The recordings are from the Decca series, and include: Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody; Give My Regards To Broadway; Sonny Boy; April Showers; Anniversary Song; Easter Parade; My Mammy; California, Here I Come; Toot, Toot, Tootsie; and Swanee. |
![]() | Going For A Song GFS-018 Not to be confused with others of the same name, this British import includes tracks recorded on the Decca label, including both studio recordings and Kraft Music Hall tracks. The selections include: Swanee; California Here I Come; Toot, Toot, Tootsie; I'm Sitting On Top Of The World; For Me And My Gal; Give My Regards To Broadway; My Mammy; Let Me Sing And I'm Happy; I Only Have Eyes For You; April Showers; You Made Me Love You; Oh You Beautiful Doll; Sonny Boy; Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody; When The Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin Along; After You've Gone; Avalon; There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder; and Anniversary Song. The verse for California is cut out, and several of the songs have what sounds like dropouts. This might be a good fill in disc, but I cannot recommend it as an essential Jolson item. |

![]() | MCA 088-112-692-2 MCA has re-released these dozen original Decca tracks in a remastered CD as part of a 20th Century Masters collection. Tracks include: Swanee; California, Here I Come; April Showers; My Mammy; Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody; You Made Me Love You; Anniversary Song; Alexander's Ragtime Band (w/Crosby); Sonny Boy; Liza; Toot, Toot, Tootsie; When You Were Sweet Sixteen. The quality is quite good, but you should know that this is a subset of the tracks from the earlier MCA CD The Best Of The Decca Years, shown below. Still, it is a good, clean, CD, and it is good to see MCA continuing to release Jolson tracks. If only they would open those archives! |
